Childhood

I started playing tennis at 9 years of age at the Belvedere Tennis Club, just north of the Golden Gate in Marin County. Under my dad's tutelage, I quickly climbed the Northern California junior rankings, achieving the #1 rating in boys 14s, 16s and 18s. After receiving a full tennis scholarship to UC Berkeley, I played #1 for the Bears over two years, attaining All- American status.

ATP Pro-Tour Career
I joined the pro tour in 1978 and travelled the world for a number of years earning wins over Jim Courier, Miloslav Mecir, Jeff Borowiak, Paul Annacone, Marty Riessen, Peter McNamara, Glenn Mitchibata and several other highly ranked professional players.  A few weeks after losing to all time great Ken Rosewall at the Australian Open, I experienced the greatest thrill of my professional life. While training with Aussie great, Fred Stolle, at Turnberry Isle in Florida, I practiced with Rod Laver one morning and Ken Rosewall that same afternoon!  "Beauty Mate"!

Coaching

After the tour, I returned to the Belvedere Tennis Club in 1990 as Director of Tennis and enjoyed a 20 year career there. Just a few of my responsibilities included teaching private and group lessons of all ages and levels, running summer camps and tournaments, hosting social mixers and managing a stocked Pro Shop.  Each year the Cal men's and women's team would come to the BTC to play a pro-am to raise money for their program. Over my almost 30 years in coaching tennis , I have been blessed to work with many of the best young Northern California prospects including Alexis Hombrecher, Charles Hoeveler, Scotty Scott and India Houghton (Stanford) Nicky and Paul Barretto and Pam Nelson (UC Berkeley) Anna Varnay (Columbia), Mikaila Smith (Willamette), Elizabeth Plotkin (Duke), and Elly Hakami, who achieved a top 30 world ranking.

Wood Racquet Ranch - Culmination of a Dream

Wood Racquet Ranch has been a dream of mine for many years. Located in the beautiful Applegate Valley in Southern Oregon, my vision has been to create a peaceful tennis getaway on this spectacular riverfront Ranch. With two courts in a farm-like setting, a large organic food and flower garden, and swimming in the pristine Applegate River, the Wood Racquet Ranch is the perfect place to reduce the stress and tension of this modern-day world.

Tastefully furnished apartments are available in downtown Jacksonville, a short and scenic 20 minute drive to Wood Racquet Ranch. Jacksonville, a charming Gold Rush town built in the 1860s, has everything you desire within walking distance. Great restaurants, enticing antique shops, alluring parks and a clean, safe atmosphere where kids can ride bikes. I love this small town more than any other and I have traveled this world!

Please look thoroughly through this website and feel free to contact me with any questions. I am sure after experiencing Wood Racquet Ranch and all the Applegate Valley (AVA) has to offer, you will long to return!
